For patients recovering from any accident or illness, just being home can bring added relief and a faster recovery. In order to provide our patients with the best possible care, we have added an In-Office surgery suite to our practice. Today, In-Office outpatient surgery is often the choice of my patients. It offers specialized care while minimizing disruption of their personal life and avoiding unnecessary hospitalization.
The primary features of In-Office outpatient surgery are its convenience and lower costs. It allows many patients to undergo medical testing and surgical procedures in the office without the necessity of an overnight hospital stay.
Additionally, In-Office outpatient surgery has proven especially beneficial for individuals who experience anxiety when put in the hospital. Our medical staff, with whom our patients feel comfortable with, are on hand in the surgical suite. This offers a more personal and comfortable approach to surgery and provides more complete care for the patient.
Outpatient surgery is available because of recent changes which have been made in anesthesiology. Anesthesia is not as risky as it once was and recovery is more rapid. This is due in part to the development of twilight sleep.
Twilight sleep is an intravenous sedation technique utilizing two or more drugs, an analgesic (pain killer) and sedative. In combination with this a local anesthetic is generally administered. Under this sedation and local anesthesia, the patient feels no pain and is very relaxed. The condition or state produced by twilight sleep is not as deep as other forms of anesthesia such as a general anesthetic administered in a hospital. It is both effective and safe. Another benefit of this method is the long-lasting effect of the pain killer administered during the sedation.
Several Different Minor Surgical Procedures Are Offered On An Outpatient Basis At Our Office:
- Blepharoplasty (cosmetic eye surgery)
- Facial reconstruction after injury or cancer
- Chin implants
- Otoplasty (ear pinning)
- Rhinoplasty (nose reconstruction)
- Endoscopic sinus surgery
- Scar revision
If you are in need of some type of surgery, be sure to consider the possibility of In-Office outpatient treatment. Today, many insurance companies are requiring the use of day surgery in order to receive full benefits. This can save you money while letting you recover comfortably at home.
Most nasal and sinus problems can be treated adequately by conventional means. However, when treatment modalities such as environment control and antihistamines and decongestants are ineffective and allergy shots are not useful, there are new and exciting operative techniques which can restore nasal breathing, improve the sense of smell and relieve the chronic “sinus” headache. An evaluation is necessary and frequently involves the CT scan which can reveal significant disease the conventional X-ray techniques would have missed.
Once the problem is diagnosed, the physician may recommend endoscopic sinus surgery. Recent advances in nasal endoscopy have significantly affected surgical techniques now used in intranasal and sinus procedures. By using small, specially designed nasal telescopes, the surgeon can see more clearly into the nose and sinuses to remove the diseased tissue. But more importantly, access to a number of areas within the sinuses is so improved with endoscopes that procedures which previously required extensive internal incisions can now be performed through the sinus scope inside the natural nasal cavity.
Sinus and nasal disease can be treated more effectively than ever before with endoscopy. Additionally, endoscopy can now be combined with nasal cosmetic surgery. Today, patients can expect their sinus and nasal surgery to be less traumatic, less painful with early healing and a shorter recuperative time.
